4 Gorgeous Kitchen Islands

19 Feb

A kitchen island can add organization, extra work surface and even extra seating.  I thought I’d gather up some amazing islands to inspire us today. This first island is the most elaborate I’ve ever seen!  I especially like the contrast of the blue color with the glossy wooden top.

Dreamy Kitchen Island #4.  This seems to combine table and island into one, and I love it!  I can imagine chopping veggies while talking with kids and friends, then settling down to a delicious but relaxed dinner.

Lighthouse Blue,

Cape Cod Gray,

and Bar Harbor Gray.

Ta da !

Our new Lighthouse Blue was inspired by a color found inside a historic home, the dining room  to be exact, restored by John Heintz in Richlantown, PA.

Cape Code Gray and Bar Harbor Gray were created in response to numerous requests from customers, and were first created for special restoration projects of historic buildings in the northeast.

Four Window Seats To Choose Between

6 Jan

Baby it’s cold outside! Time to get cozy and snuggle up with a fur baby, and a good book or movie.

Here are some beautiful spots that you could create in your home.

Roger S. Wright Furniture, Ltd.

Roger S. Wright Furniture, Ltd. built the functional seating and storage piece pictured above in a kitchen.  Painted with Old Village Paint color Black.  I love the hinged doors and rich wooden top.

The window below looks in to a spot that looks big enough to double as a guest bed.

The adorable window seat shown below is proof that you don’t need a large space to create a lovely spot for relaxing.

If you don’t have a nook to build into, consider this window seat, created by building into a corner, below a window.

Many of the seats above are done in shades of white, from bright white to lovely creams. From buttermilk Beige, to Colonial White, Old Village colors are thick and long lasting, and often cover in a SINGLE coat.  Choose one of these colors, and spend less time working and more time relaxing!

Stay warm everyone! And, if you have a window seat photo to share with us, we’d love to see it.

Stain and Varnish in One: Great For Custom Woodwork, Like in This Private Library

27 Aug

A private library with custom woodwork–be still my heart.  This couple created a beautiful literary escape in their own home!  Last week we talked about Old Village Paint’s stain product which combines stain and protective coating into one–and today we can see some beautiful results!

The owners of this library share: “This is the Cherry Library project that we finished in 2010 that we used the #1400 clear paste finish on and just love the results. ”

Isn’t this beautiful? I love the details.

Here are some tips on using this product, and getting the most out of any wood staining project.

1. Be sure the wood is clean and smooth. If the wood needs sanding, do it now.  With a soft cloth or brush apply Gel Stain, and then wipe- preferably with the grain. The more stain left on the wood the darker the color.  If a darker finish is desired, repeat this process after 30 to 60 minutes. After two coats you will have a lovely low sheen. (One coat leaves very little sheen, but the wood is filled and protected).

2.  You may stop with one or two coats of Stain, remembering that one coat offers almost no sheen-you may prefer this- many antiquarians do. If you want more sheen and a darker color use two or more coats of Stain. If you wish more sheen, but not darker use the Clear Gel Varnish. Note, please! We have used the Clear Gel Vanish to make our l Stains, so the Gel Varnish is simply a stain vehicle with no color.

3. You can use as many Clear coats as you wish, allowing at least 60 minutes between applications. You can also mix; colors to obtain your own custom hue. Try first coat Cherry and second coat Walnut. This is “layering”. Paneling and Floors can be finished using the same basic instructions.

As always, feel free to contact us with questions!

Wood Stain + Sealant = Less Drying Time

19 Aug

Would you like to stain, seal, and finish your wood project with just one application?

You can!  Old Village Paints has a paste stain or paste varnish that combine stain and sealant IN ONE.

Try these products on:

  • kitchen cabinets
  • paneling
  • furniture
  • wood decorative pieces
  • floors

What we love about these products:

  •  it possible to “work” with the stain and varnish much longer, finish all manner of woodwork – furniture, floors, even braining and furniture decoration.
  • It dries with a hard even film that, looks and feels like a hand-rubbed multiple coat finish.

Simply wipe it on, rub lightly and allow it to dry. That’s it! It seals, stains and finishes in one application, and on soft grainy woods with knots it gives the finish an even appearance impossible to attain with penetrating stains.

This shows the stain and varnish on different types of wood:

What do we love about this stain? It’s:

  • Available in 5 natural wood colours, white and clear
  • You can use it for indoor or outdoor projects.
  • Polyurethane reinforcement provides protection without the yellowing.
  • Oil-base with mineral spirits cleanup
  • Superior ease of application, simply rub on with #000 or #0000 steel wool in the direction of grain and wipe off.

Smooth Buttermilk Paint in Historic Colors: What is Buttermilk Paint & Where Can You Use It?

22 Jul

Buttermilk paint was created out of necessity.  In early colonial America, when traveling painters were away from the city center, drying oils, pigments and varnishes were scarce and very expensive. Painters turned to an old country custom of using farm products, earth colors and brick dust to make their paint colours.

OLD VILLAGE has reproduced these products, staying as close to the original process as possible–except when certain materials were known to be unhealthy.  We have kept the spirit of the Colonial American Craftsman in producing these paints, preserving the beautiful colors and wonderful smooth, buttery finish they create.

Click the photo below to explore the colors available in buttermilk paint!

Where Can I Use Buttermilk Paints?

OLD VILLAGE Buttermilk Paint Colours may be used on interiors of barns, buildings, walls and trim, and on furniture and artifacts. These colours dry to a beautiful matte finish that do not destroy the texture of the wood.

Multiple coats will build a longer lasting and more opaque film.  You can add water to thin the paint and create a  transparent stain effect.
